OUR STORY

Ellie Abraham, the visionary founder of Village Cafe in Brooklyn, NY, embarked on a culinary journey in 2013 that has since become a beloved fixture in the community. Born and raised in a family deeply rooted in Azerbaijani traditions, Ellie passion for food was profoundly influenced by his mother, whose culinary prowess and dedication to preserving their cultural heritage left an indelible mark on him.

Growing up, Ellie was immersed in the rich tapestry of Azerbaijani cuisine, a blend of Middle Eastern, Eastern European, and Central Asian flavors. His mother’s kitchen was a place of warmth, where the aromas of saffron, pomegranates, and freshly baked bread mingled in the air, creating an inviting atmosphere that drew family and friends together. It was here that Ellie learned the importance of using fresh, high-quality ingredients and the art of balancing spices to create dishes that were both flavorful and comforting.

Determined to share these cherished traditions with a broader audience, Ellie moved to Brooklyn, a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. He saw an opportunity to introduce the vibrant and diverse flavors of Azerbaijani cuisine to New Yorkers, many of whom were unfamiliar with the culinary treasures of this region. Thus, Village Cafe was born, a testament to Ellie dedication and passion for his heritage.

At Village Cafe, each dish tells a story, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions of Azerbaijani cooking. The menu features a variety of dishes that showcase the unique blend of flavors and ingredients characteristic of the cuisine. Signature dishes like plov, a fragrant rice pilaf cooked with saffron and mixed with tender pieces of meat and vegetables, and dolma, grape leaves stuffed with a savory mixture of rice, herbs, and ground meat, have become favorites among the restaurant’s patrons.

Ellie commitment to authenticity is evident in every aspect of Village Cafe. He works closely with local suppliers to source the freshest ingredients and often imports specialty items directly from Azerbaijan to ensure the flavors are as true to tradition as possible. His mother’s recipes serve as the foundation for many of the dishes, each one a tribute to her culinary artistry and the love she infused into her cooking.

The welcoming atmosphere of Village Cafe mirrors the hospitality of Ellie own upbringing. From the moment guests step through the door, they are treated like family, enveloped in the warmth and generosity that are hallmarks of Azerbaijani culture. Ellie passion for his heritage and dedication to sharing it with others have made Village Cafe a beloved destination for both locals and visitors seeking an authentic and memorable dining experience.

Ellie Abraham’s journey from his mother’s kitchen to the heart of Brooklyn is a testament to the power of food in bridging cultures and creating connections. Through Village Cafe, he has not only preserved his family’s culinary traditions but has also enriched the cultural landscape of Brooklyn, offering a taste of Azerbaijan that is both authentic and inspired.

This is a dimensional portal to Baku if You ask me. I love it. If you have not had Azerbaijan cuisine you are missing out. It’s distinct and delicious and the atmosphere here is authentic A.F. This place is just another reason why NYC is a Foodies paradise, built into an old used-car-dealership with great success it’s a trip to another world. If You don’t dig Lamb tho, don’t bother. This is a lamb joint! And it’s outstanding.

First time trying Azerbaijan restaurant. The place is super cute and price point is great.I really like kutaby. It is. Like a soft pancake with filling. Simple but very delicious. I ordered lamb and green filling.I also ordered piti, which is a lamb soup. Very flavorful. Kompot, a boiled fruit drink, is also great. Last two items I ordered were kebab and pilaf. You can’t go wrong with kebab. Pilaf is a bit sweet for my taste. Overall 10/10 would recommend.

Being here is like being in a totally different part of the world that is not at all NYC. Entering the parking lot behind the dumpster, you don't think much of it. But the instant you walk through the door, the decor, natural wood coloring, and lighting are so transportive. Beautiful, homey space. The staff are polite and matter-of-fact.The menu is as varied as it is interesting. I'd never specifically had Azerbaijani food before so I wanted to try everything. Unfortunately it wasn't possible to order the whole menu so we got the veal tongue salad, kharcho (soup), kutaby with lamb, mother-in-law's chicken, and the butter-vanilla pastry for dessert. Everything was rich, decadent, and hearty, yet well-balanced with bright fresh cilantro, dill, and other herbs. Portions are gigantic!! And it all comes with fluffy warm fresh bread. The kutaby was definitely a standout - a small flatbread type thing with spices and a dill / yogurt sauce on the side.Definitely would come back!!

I try to be objective in my reviews. So now I’ll write everything as it is. A cafe with a hint of rustic style could still look a little more "interesting" in terms of design. Just nails driven into the wall are definitely not the only thing that should remind me of my native village... The food and table setting seemed quite contrasting to me. There are dishes that were prepared perfectly - beef shish kebab, fried liver, very tasty bread, decent vegetable salads... Grilled shrimp - the cook burned it. Fried potatoes with mushrooms are not for everyone... The cutting looked strange - for a table of more than 10 people there were 4 pieces of each type of meat on the plate... However, all the nuances of the interior and cuisine are smoothed out by the friendly and positive cafe workers. Big respect to the staff in the hall. To summarize, I want to say that the impressions of the evening were definitely not spoiled, everything was good, but this cafe definitely has something to work on to improve the situation as a whole.

First time to try this place, beautiful setting, great atmosphere, and delicious food. They offer everything from Shish-Kebab to soup and dessert! The Azerbaijani cuisine there is unique and tasteful. The lamb dishes especially the fried lamb liver are flavorful, I tried it, but it wasn’t as advertised in their photos in terms of portions and looks, That’s why I dropped the rating one star. But the Turkish bread is a must-try. The staff is friendly, and the service is prompt. Also, Get the black tea pot, it’s worth every drop of it.. Definitely, this place in general worth a visit!
